Frustrating start for TFA Elite’s debutants against PE on Sunday
30 SEPTEMBER 2024
The TFA Elite team took to the field in an eagerly anticipated match, with new players making their debut and the team looking to build momentum. However, despite a solid first half and some standout individual performances, the game ended in a disappointing 1-1 draw after conceding a last-minute goal.
Head coach Fouad Hafid spoke pre-match about the importance of mental toughness and playing with heart. His instructions to the debutants were clear: “Enjoy yourselves, believe in your abilities, and don’t be afraid of making mistakes.” He emphasised that the team needed to focus on defensive shape, winning the first and second balls, and moving the ball quickly.
The game, held under the sweltering sun, saw the debut of several new players, including Syed Ali Raza from Pakistan and Alonzo Reece Bartlett from South Africa, who expressed excitement before the match.
Alonzo, reflecting on his first experience playing outside of South Africa, stated, “I’m excited for the opportunity to see the level of the game, and I was excited to perform and try to get a few points for the team.” His determination to keep a clean sheet and secure three points was evident as the team took to the field with a coordinated offence, holding possession throughout the first half.
First Half: A Strong Start
TFA kicked off the match with intensity and coordination, immediately taking control of the ball. Within the first ten minutes, the opposition, PE, attempted to challenge TFA’s defence but failed to capitalise. TFA’s goalkeeper Amin Aghaei Kazem Abadi made several crucial saves, ensuring the team maintained their early advantage.
At the 15-minute mark, TFA experienced a setback when Dyferdio Solega Misidjan sustained an injury and had to be substituted by Latif Blessing. Despite this, TFA pressed forward, with debut player Syed Ali Raza making a promising attempt at goal.
The breakthrough came at the 37-minute when Kwabena Kalala Dannful scored a beautifully coordinated goal, putting TFA ahead. His strike followed excellent ball movement and positioning, igniting the home crowd and setting the tone for the remainder of the half.
Despite PE attempting to gain control of the ball around the 30-minute mark, TFA’s defence remained solid. A standout moment was when Abdoulaye Keita intercepted the ball, engaging in a fierce duel to regain possession for his team. PE’s Said Reda Fouad attempted a goal but failed to beat TFA’s relentless defence.
The first half ended with TFA leading 1-0, showing promise and confidence going into the break.
Second Half: Missed Chances
The second half began with TFA pushing for a second goal, but despite their efforts, they couldn’t find the back of the net. Tornike Okriashvili dazzled with a clever feint, tricking the opposition players and expertly passing the ball to maintain TFA’s momentum.
Kwabena Kalala Dannful had another opportunity to double his tally, but his attempt narrowly missed, leaving the score unchanged.
In a frustrating turn of events, Simon Botchway received a yellow card from the referee after a heated exchange, further intensifying the tension on the field.
TFA defended well as the match entered its final moments, but PE persisted. Then, in the added time, disaster struck. PE managed to secure a corner, and in the dying seconds, they scored, equalising the match and leaving TFA players and fans heartbroken.
Post-match Reactions
After the match, Mr. Ali El Jishi, CEO of TFA, expressed frustration. “It’s always hard when you concede in the last minute,” he said. “We had two clear chances to kill the game off and didn’t take them. That’s football—you don’t finish teams off, they finish you.”
Despite the draw feeling like a loss, there were positive takeaways. El Jishi praised debut player Syed Ali Raza, saying, “He was phenomenal today. This was his first professional match, and he caused the opposition real problems.” However, the director also pointed out the team’s mentality issue: “We have the skill, but we need to toughen up mentally.”
Looking Forward
TFA will focus on “finishing teams off” in their training sessions. The team’s ability to play quality football was evident throughout the match. Still, as Mr. El Jishi noted, they need to capitalise on their opportunities to ensure victories in the future.
As the season progresses, TFA will look to improve on this performance and learn from their mistakes. While this debut match ended in frustration, there is no doubt that the talent and potential in the squad can lead to tremendous success moving forward.
