In football, attitude is everything. If you are passionate about the game, you’ve got to have a give-it-all attitude regardless of whether it’s a professional game, a training session, or an assessment program. This is why before signing a player to the team, besides testing their physical fitness and skill-sets, we also do a thorough psychological evaluation.
Today, we scheduled a psychological assessment of a very talented defender. But unfortunately, it turned out to be a very disappointing experience. This young athlete was an hour late for his evaluation and did the test in haste. He didn't bother about explaining himself well enough. All his answers were very short and reflected a lack of enthusiasm. The worst part is that he didn't even bother to complete the assessment.
It’s amazing to see how a player who aspires to be a part of a professional football club has this kind of a non-serious attitude. They need to understand that professional football requires professional conduct as well. Once you have the discipline and determination to excel, everything else just follows.
We invest a great deal of money and time in our assessment and selection programs simply because we want players who have the right combination of talent and professionalism. And professionalism is all about being responsible in all aspects of your job. You can’t expect to get a professional contract by arriving late for the test and then leaving without even completing it. The right attitude is one of the top criteria of our assessment program and there is simply no compromise on that. Remember, talent without attitude is a waste of talent. So if you want to be a successful football player, you’ve got to have the right balance of skills, passion, and professionalism.
